Michelle Henstock, VP of Operations, Chicago Sky
Announced by principal owner Michael Alter at a press conference on December 13, 2016, Chicago Sky has selected Amber Stocks as their new Head Coach and General Manager.
Stocks was the former assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks and was essential in scouting and strategizing the plays that initiated the Sparks’ momentum into becoming the 2016 WNBA Champions.
Stocks’ keen understanding and command of basketball are bolstered by her experience as a player in her early career. As a four-year women’s basketball letter winner at University of Cincinnati, she played 116 games, making 99 starts, and earned herself a spot in the record books for multiple categories, including games played and three-point shots made.
Stocks spent time in the Notre Dame and Tennessee women’s programs, working closely with the late Pat Summit and spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Xavier University where she aided the Musketeers in five 20-win seasons and six national post-season appearances.
However, with her competition including WNBA and NBA assistants and former WNBA and NBA coaches, it seemed that the odds were against Stocks. In the end, what set her apart from the other candidates was her zeal for basketball and Chicago Sky. “She brings an incredible youthful energy and positive approach to the game along with a deep knowledge of basketball, and a great passion and intellectual curiosity,” says Alter.
Having been named just a few weeks ago, Stocks already has goals for the team. “Each Chicago Sky athlete is a fierce competitor with a hunger to win,” says Stocks. “Our goal is to compete for a WNBA Championship. We will work daily to improve our defensive efficiency and sharpen our offensive attack. We have the top mid-range scorers in the league; therefore, we will complement that strength with an increased post presence and multiple 3-point threats.”
Stocks deeply believes in the spirit and drive that lives in every Chicago Sky athlete. “Across every category, we have the right tools to continue to build for championship success,” says Stocks. “Our roster is balanced with elite players, bringing both veteran experience and fresh energy. Led by the steady commitment of Sky Riders, our fans ignite the arena with their passion and support. With the city of Chicago behind us, I am excited to lead this group of professional athletes.”
