If the name Nicole Townsend rings a bell, it's probably because you've seen this former model on WGN as a beauty expert, read her work in one of many local publications, or bumped into her volunteering at a Step Up women's network event. If you're just getting to know this self-proclaimed glamour addict, it's safe to say that she's earned her experimental stripes on more than one occasion by continuously taking risks (she's had her head shaved for a year) in the name of beauty.
Townsend recently launched her own YouTube channel, Pretty in the Windy City, so we're going to be sharing some of her profiles and top-notch tips here. To kick things off, this beauty boss interviewed FW: Chicago's managing editor, Rebecca Taras-Lee on all things beauty.
Meet Rebecca Taras-Lee, y’all–the talented wordsmith and digital managing editor of Chicago’s new women’s magazine, FW: Chicago. Before serving as the managing editor for FW: Chicago digital and print magazine, Rebecca was the Chicago editor for Refinery29, and contributed to a variety of local and national media outlets. She’s a lover of red lipstick (duh) and began hosting beauty sleepovers as a teenager. I would’ve killed to be on that invite list! Read on to find out more about some of Rebecca’s beauty faves…
How old were you when you first started wearing makeup, and what did you buy?
"I love this question! I would definitely say Jr. High, but that was limited to colored lip gloss and maybe a little mascara by 8th grade. By high school, I went full-throttle! I was also always the kid who had 'beauty sleepovers,' complete with a bag full of drugstore skincare products."
What’s the most bizarre beauty product or treatment you’ve ever tried?
"I was in Jamaica and I had a massage/body treatment that culminated with the therapist pouring real rum all over my body. I definitely wasn’t expecting that."
What beauty-related product would you buy if you only had $5 in your wallet?
"Dry shampoo! I love getting blow-outs, so this beauty product is key. The formula by Dove comes in just under $5 at $4.99."
If you had to choose only one shade of lipstick to wear for the rest of your life, which would you pick and why?
"Red! Without a doubt, it would be red. Even if I’m not sporting a full-face of makeup, red lipstick makes me look more awake and simply more put together."
Tell me more about FW: Chicago. What aspect of the new project are you most proud of?
"FW: is Chicago’s latest magazine that showcases where women live, work, and play in the city. I’m most proud of the fact that I get to highlight the stories of entrepreneurial and successful women who might not otherwise be in the spotlight. In my opinion, everyone has a story to tell."
