There are a lot of fluff words associated with spa treatments, and if you fall into the trap, more likely than not you will end up disappointed after your 50-minutes of “bliss.” Having worked as an esthetician in another life, I’ve learned to differentiate fact from fiction by executing dozens of treatments firsthand. I sheepishly admit that, sometimes, I actually felt guilty about some of the services I had to administer, knowing in my heart that every buzz word in the book wasn’t going to make a difference on my client’s skin.
This was never the case, however, when I worked at the Peninsula Spa Chicago. To this day, I can honestly say it was one of the best professional experiences I ever had, from the staff to the quality of services to (hello!) working at the Peninsula in general. So when I was invited to be one of the first “outsiders” to receive a treatment from their new service menu, I couldn’t get into my robe and slippers fast enough.
This month (on August, 17), Simply Peninsula is introducing a bevy of results-driven (for real) Vedic aromatherapy spa treatments called Sattva (meaning “pure” in the Vedic practice), exclusively formulated by an incredible, award-winning Australian brand—Subtle Energies.
So, what exactly makes these treatments so effective? It’s a combination of things. For starters, it’s all about the oils used. Make no mistake—these are not your classic EO’s that are used in traditional Ayurvedic treatments. It’s not that those are bad, but the Vedic oils are specific to the practice, so the results received through treatment are optimized. And speaking of results, each service combines classic Ayurveda methods with contemporary massage techniques (think remedial, lymphatic drainage) and an emphasis on Marma therapy, otherwise known as Ayurvedic energy therapy.
Of the eight new services (which can be seen here), I experienced the Vedic aromatherapy full-body and face massage, which included a Vedic foot ritual and the use of a Kasa bowl to help draw out toxins and excessive heat from my body. Because the massage incorporated the numerous techniques listed above, I can honestly say I never felt better after having one—from the inside out. A treatment like this is so much more than something that will get a few kinks out. It’s balancing, purposeful, and (I’ll say it again) results-driven.
If you receive a body treatment or massage, my advice would be to keep the oils on your skin as long as possible. In my case, that was until the next day. Skin-softening benefits aside, the stress-relieving aromatherapy element stayed with me until my shower, thus proving the integrity and power of the incredible oils produced by Subtle Energies.
While these services do come with what some would consider a hefty price tag, I suggest you keep them in mind for your next staycation, reward after running the Chicago Marathon, romantic weekend, or whatever other reason you can justify feeling refreshed and renewed without having to hop on a plane.
