It's no secret that living in a city like Chicago can create a little wear and tear on our skin. Between the pollution, wind, humidity, and brutal winters, a gal has to keep a bevy of products in her cabinet to adapt to the city's ever-changing ways. Despite the bad rap we receive for our weather, Illinois as a whole is only 25 on the list of the most wrinkle-prone U.S. states, according to the 2nd Annual Wrinkle Ranking study by RoC® Skincare and Sperling’s Best Places.
Here’s why Illinois ranks #25 in the Wrinkle Ranking:
- While the nickname “Windy City” did not originally come from Chicago's weather but from its politics, Illinois gives this nickname a whole new meaning by scoring one of the highest average wind speeds in the U.S.
- Hooray! On the plus side, in comparison to fellow Americans, Illinois citizens fall on the better side of being satisfied with life and overall well-being.
- Another plus (although it often doesn't feel like one)—Illinois residents experience fewer sunny days than almost 80 percent of the rest of the country, which inevitably reduces exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays.
It is all in the study, but in case you were wondering which states ranked at the top of the list, here are the Top Five Most Wrinkle-Prone States:
- New York
- West Virginia
While 25 isn't horrible, we sure wouldn't mind being lower on the list. So we asked board-certified dermatologist Dr. Carolyn Jacob to share her tips on how to fight wrinkles despite our environs.
What are some preventative lifestyle changes that people living in Illinois can make to keep wrinkles at bay?
Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses daily. Wear zinc oxide sunscreen when doing sports outdoors and reapply every 90 minutes. Get seven-plus hours of sleep to reduce stress. Don’t smoke and don't eat a lot of sugar. Eat lots of omega 3s to reduce inflammation and lots of fruits and vegetables for antioxidants.
What topical treatments or preventative treatments do you suggest to mitigate environmental factors in Illinois?
The residents of Illinois have a resilience to harsh winter conditions, but our skin does suffer. Ultimately, cold, windy weather can leave skin dehydrated, flaky, and dull in appearance. I recommend using a product in the evening while you sleep that contains retinol, such as RoC® RETINOL CORREXION® Deep Wrinkle Night Cream. The retinol in this product will also help control flaky build-up caused from the colder climate. However, when summer comes along, Illinois residents truly take advantage of it by spending as much time outdoors as possible. For protection, try RoC® RETINOL CORREXION® Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. If you plan to be out in the sun excessively, I recommend reapplying sun protection every 90 minutes.
