Many tech companies, including AppNexus and Medallia, have recently joined the "returnships" movement, meaning they have created positions for employees returning to the workforce. Andee Harris, chief engagement officer at HighGround, tells us a little more about them and how they make transitioning back into the workplace easier for returning workers.
How do returnships affect businesses?
There is a very positive impact on businesses. You can get some great talent you wouldn’t necessarily have access to. The ability to find workers who were once very successful and letting them get back into the workplace is a great opportunity! You can get a more diverse workforce, like including women in tech companies. It’s a win-win for both the person returning and for the business.
How do returnships benefit the returning employee?
A lot of women leave the workplace and then want to get back into it, but a good portion of them have been kept at home. These returnships give them the ability to feel more comfortable getting back to the workforce. Otherwise, they might not feel like they have the skill to get back into it, but these returnships allow them to feel much more comfortable and able.
Do returning employees have to start back at the bottom?
No, by using returnships they can get back to the level they left at, no need to be set back. You don’t lose your abilities just because you stayed home for a time. If you understand a certain field, you might just need to be brought up for the times, particularly regarding new technology.
What fields often use returnships? Is there a high retention rate in these fields?
A lot of tech companies are using returnships because they are struggling to get diverse talent. There’s a lot more openness and willingness in tech firms to use these returnships. People like it when there’s a diverse workplace, which helps from a retention standpoint. These returnships allow companies to have more experienced workers who can help other, maybe less experienced, employees. Anytime you can give people quality individuals, that’s really important. It can foster engagement around current employees.
