Soulful Sunday is a weekly dose of inspiration from busy Chicago women who still manage to stay balanced no matter what their career—or life—throws their way.
Soul Sister: Rebecca Darr, CEO of @WINGSProgramINC
Rebecca Darr became CEO of WINGS Program, Inc., in November 2014, after serving as the executive director since 1999. Rebecca’s passion to end domestic violence and homelessness as well as her dynamic and decisive leadership has grown WINGS into one of the largest agencies serving women and children fleeing domestic violence. She has built two WINGS Safe Houses, including the first new one in the city of Chicago in over a decade. WINGS' assets have grown from $600,000 to over $25 million, with homes and apartments throughout the region designed to ensure that victims of domestic violence never return to their abuser.
What is your favorite way to unwind and relax?
I enjoy running and working out with my husband and friends. It is not just time to stay healthy, it is our social time as well. It also helps to have a hot bath and glass of wine after a long run.
What do you do that feeds your soul? Something that is just for you that not many people know about?
I love to listen to George Winston to relax. I have loved his beautiful piano playing for years and the music is so soothing and inspirational. I also love poetry and inspirational sayings. I enjoy sharing those pieces with others.
Is there one book that you find particularly inspiring and would recommend to all of your friends?
The Little Prince has always been a favorite book of mine. It reminds me that you are not a true leader if you have no followers, and that you are responsible for what you tame. Another favorite is the book, Who Moved My Cheese? So many people struggle with change and change is constant.
How do you catch up with friends and maintain your friendships when everyone is so busy?
My friends are an integral support system to the work I do. They attend WINGS events and we also spend weekend evenings having big dinners together. We run together and vacation together. Because my job is not work, it is a calling, my friends are always with me.
