I remember standing on top of the high-dive platform when I was ten years old, staring down in terror. It was the last day of summer before the pool closed for the season and just the sight of the drop took my breath away.
My best friend and I had wanted to jump all summer, but were too scared. On that day, we decided to go for it. We counted once, and then chickened out. We counted again, then made up another excuse. Finally on our third attempt, we closed our eyes and jumped!
And as silly as it may sound, jumping off the high dive when you’re a child isn’t all that different from how it feels to put yourself out there in business.
You want to. You know you can. But sometimes it’s so terrifying that you stall by making excuses.
But an excuse is just a lie presented as the truth. Let’s look at three common excuses holding people back from starting their businesses and the truth everyone needs to hear to be set free to win.
Excuse: “I’m not business-minded.”
When I hear this, I know that what you’re really saying is you feel unequipped and unqualified. This fear is really common. But you don’t need a business degree to run a successful business. Many successful businesses were created by women who simply had an idea! You just need help with your idea, which is exactly why I wrote my new book, Business Boutique.
Excuse: “I don’t have the money to start a business.”
The truth is, you can bypass most start-up costs by getting creative, bartering, asking for help, and using what you have. You can start your business tomorrow with nothing more than your idea and a Facebook page.
Excuse: “Someone else is already doing it.”
So what? There’s room in the marketplace for you, too. The world is not a place of limits and scarcity.
I believe there is a place for your unique voice, passion, and talent. That thing you want to do—the dream that keeps nagging at you—is a job only you can do. Yes, there may be other people doing something similar. But I believe there’s a purpose for that passion in your heart, and it’s a purpose that the world desperately needs you to step into.
The reality is, starting a business can be terrifying. You can stall and make excuses all you want to. But at the end of the day, if you want it bad enough, you’ve got to just close your eyes, count to three, and jump!
