ABC 7 Chicago's Traffic Anchor, Roz Varon has spent the past 38 years educating and informing audiences about road travel and transportation news along with her colorful “Weekender” reports. She was the very first TV Traffic Anchor in the country who became a pioneer blogger with her fun filled stories, “Roz on the Road,” taking us all along for the ride. Her huge following gave her the courage to write a book “On The Road With Roz,” published last year during “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” as she is a Breast Cancer Survivor.
“I wrote the book In part, because of my followers. So many people who read my travel blogs expressed an interest in having all of my essays in one place. Putting them together in book form was a natural. It was also, in part, on my bucket list. Having a life-threatening illness gave me the courage to follow through with something I'd often thought about doing, but didn't think I would be able to achieve.”
From Route 66 to Israel, Roz’s adventures take her all over the world. But she is not alone, her daughter Sara has been by her side. They started when Sara was 14 years old. She’s now a senior in college.
“Being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer when my daughter was only ten years old was like having the rug pulled out from under me. You don't see it coming and your whole world is turned upside down in a snap. I remember asking my doctor, through tears, who would raise my daughter? When he answered "You will," it was the slap in the face of reality that I needed to move forward. It wasn't easy, and I tell this to anyone who is newly diagnosed. I believe the worst part of a cancer diagnosis is the initial diagnosis itself. Your world has changed forever, but once you have a plan, a way to attack this monstrous disease, you feel like you've taken back control of your life in a situation that seems so out of your control. “
“On The Road With Roz”, transports readers to wonderful places but also reveals Roz’s personal journey battling stage four metastatic breast cancer. Part of the proceeds from the book are donated to Breast Cancer Care and Research at Rush University Medical Center where Roz credits doctors for saving her life.
